Metallic Gears Floating Frame Card

Metallic gearsMetallic Gears Floating Frame Card

I seem to be on a masculine-theme card kick.

Masculine cards always seem to be a little tricky in the designing.

This idea came to me after creating my Steam Punk Gears card HERE

The embossing technique is pretty much the same, although this card ended up being a Floating Frame card.

You know, the Floating Frame technique, which is all the rage?

Usually, you end up with two cards with the technique, but I actually didn't like how the first of the two turned out.  I learned from that card that you need a lot of pieces (whether it be gears, flowers, butterflies etc) to fill in the frame or it looks empty.  That was the case with the first card which I just tossed.

But, I did really like this second piece.

If you'd like instructions on how to create a Gears Floating Frame Card, please add your name to my mailing list.

I will send you a tutorial in a pdf format as a thank you.

The sign up box is located on the upper right-hand side of this page.

Here's how I created the metallic gears.

  1. Place the Garage Gears Dies on a piece of Champagne Foil paper and cut out using the Big Shot.  Again, for the Floating Frame technique, cut out more gears than you think you'll need.  You'll probably use all of them to fill in spaces.
  2. Sponge Cherry Cobbler ink over the die cuts.  Cover with clear embossing powder and heat emboss using a heat tool.
  3. Dip the edges of the pieces in Versamark and heat emboss using black and copper embossing powders.  Switch powders in different areas so you have a mix of the two colors.

That's it!

You'll have some interesting pieces with a burnished metal look for your masculine-theme projects.

I added the gears frame to a piece of Silver Foil paper which I had stamped and embossed the greeting using black embossing powder.  I added enamel dots to the centers of the gears as well as next to the greeting.

Crafting with Aluminum Cans-Joe IPA

Joe IPAJoe IPA Masculine Card

One of my favorite crafting techniques is to cut shapes out of aluminum cans and add them to my card creations.

You can view my aluminum can creations HERE

(Instructions and a link to a video tutorial on how to cut the cans can be found on this page)

I'm always on the look out for interesting designs and colors on aluminum cans.

Fortunately, my husband is a craft beer drinker and is always bringing home new beers to try.  Often, these beers have interesting labels on the cans.  My husband drinks the beer, then I confiscate the cans to create!

This was certainly the case with Joe IPA brewed by 10 Barrel Brewing in Bend, OR.

I saw this guy sitting on the steps of his camper, and immediately saw the resemblance to my stepson Josh.

This was the card I created for his recent birthday.

I embossed silver foil paper using the Big Shot and Corrugated 3D Embossing Folder.

I couldn't get the matted aluminum can piece to stay glued to the embossed silver foil paper (I tried Dimensionals and Tombow Multi-purpose Glue.  The piece kept slipping off), so I got out my Crop-a-dile (remember the Crop-a-dile from years back?), and punched holes in the four corners and through the embossed background.   I attached everything together using silver brads.  Then, it held like a charm!

Here's what the beer can looked like before I cut it up.

Love the logo, "Drink Beer Outside."

Joe-IPA-12oz-Can-2

Hope you'll give this a try.

If you do, you'll never look at aluminum cans the same again!

Supplies Used:

Paper: Basic Black, Silver Foil

Accessories: Joe IPA aluminum can, tin snips, crafting scissors, Big Shot, Corrugated 3D Embossing Folder, Crop-a-dile , silver brads
