Flower Folds Swap Card

This was my card for the Saturday Stamp Club swap.  Teresa, our Hostess, asked that the cards have lots of layers with one of them being black.  This is my kind of challenge!  I used my Big Shot and the Flower Folds Bigz XL die to cut out the flowers.

This one has a button center.

Candy Cane Christmas Coasters

We had such a great time at the Fabric Ornaments Class this weekend!

As a small thank you gift, I made each of our guests a Candy Cane Christmas fabric coaster.

This was one of those "oops" moments.  I read the directions for the fabric coasters found in the "Designer Fabric Projects" booklet that comes with each Designer Fabric assortment.  The instructions are for a Deck the Halls with a Pennant Die Christmas tree coaster.  I read through the supply list and thought, perfect, I have everything I need.  The only problem is that I misread the part about what scallop die is needed.  I read it as calling for the Scallop Square Duo die, when in fact, you need the Scallop Square Bigz die which I don't have but will be ordering soon!  Not a big deal other than the Bigz die is well, bigger.  And the Christmas tree cut out of the pennant die is way too big for even the largest scallop square found on the Duo die.  So, onto plan B!  Instead, I made a smaller coaster using the Candy Cane Christmas fabric and a small heart die. I added various buttons and brads that I had in my stash.  I think they came out really cute. I also think these would make perfect Christmas, or hostess gifts!

Fabric Coasters 013

A couple of tips:  At first I used the iron on fusible webbing to attach the cotton batting to the heart and then the heart to the coaster.  What a mess!  I now have fusible webbing/cotton batting stuck to the bottom of my iron.  So, onto plan B.  I got out my fabric glue and brushed it on to the back of the fabric and cotton batting.  This was much easier and cleaner, and I didn't have to mess with the iron, damp press cloth etc etc etc.

Layer the cotton batting between two pieces of fabric (right sides out) and run through the Big Shot together.  Same with the cotton batting and hearts.  Remember, the Big Shot will allow you to cut through up to 8 layers of fabric at once!

You can hand stitch the squares together if you don't have a sewing machine.  You can also hand stitch the heart or other applique rather than using fabric glue or fusible webbing like I did with the coaster below.  This gives the coaster a more homespun country look.

Fabric Coasters 020

I used my Crop-a-dile to punch the holes for the brads in the hearts (yay Crop-a-dile!)

Supplies Used:

Candy Cane Christmas fabric, cotton batting (purchased at a Big Box store), fabric glue, Crop-a-dile, Big Shot, Scallop Squares Duo die, Sizzix Heart die (not SU)

How to Make Fabric Ornaments-Instructions Available

I've been busy making these fabric ornaments to give as gifts.  They make me smile!  I love working with fabric. I love walking into a fabric store.  I love all the different colors and love to run my hand over the different textures.  But, alas, I do not like to sew!  This is a perfect project for me as there is absolutely no sewing involved and they are very simple to make.  I also like that you don't have to use traditional Christmas colors, and they don't have to be used just for Christmas decorating or gift giving.

I added one of the transperancy sheets with the left-over ink on top of the Fossil Stone background.  By doing so, it added more color and brightened up the card.  I stamped the images using Stazon black ink on top of the transperancy and attached it to the background using brads.  For instructions on how to create the Fossil Stone background, please visit my posting dated 09/14.

Supplies Used:

Stamp Set: Sense of Time

Ink: Poppy Parade, Daffodil Delight, Tangerine Tango, Soft Suede, Black Stazon

Paper: Poppy Parade, Basic Black

Fossil Stone Technique-Inspired by Nature

Fossil Stone!  One of my new favorite background techniques.  And it is so simple to do (see the instructions on my posting dated 09/14/10)  I used one of my favorite stamp sets, Inspired by Nature for both of these samples.

Fossil Stone 017
Supplies Used:

Stamp Sets: Inspired by Nature, Teeny Tiny Wishes

Ink: Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight and Tangerine Tango for background, Black Stazon for flowers

Paper: Daffodil Delight, Basic Black, glossy white

Accessories: two transparency sheets, Modern Label and Word Window punches, Dimensionals

This sample was truly "Inspired by Nature!"  This summer we had beautiful Tall Coneflowers growing along our creek.  They stood taller than me and attracted a whole array of butterflies.  I enjoyed standing still among them watching the butterflies landing to feed.  Sometimes, each flower would have 3 to 4 butterflies feeding at once.

Fossil Stone 048

Stamp Set: Inspired by Nature

Ink: Pretty in Pink, Bashful Blue, Marina Mist for background, Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight, Garden Green and Chocolate Chip markers for flowers

Paper: Chocolate Chip, Tangerine Tango, glossy white

Accessories: two transparencies

Fossil Stone

Fossil Stone! This is a great new background technique I learned about from my fellow SU! Demonstrators over at SUDSOL (Simply Unique Demonstrators Sharing Online). All you need is glossy card stock, regular ink pads and a couple of transparency sheets. Directions are below.

Fossil Stone 044

Close up

Fossil Stone 046

You need:

Glossy White card stock

2 or more pieces of transparency or acetate

2 or more Classic ink pads

1.       Cut glossy white card stock to size for your project. Cut two or more transparency or acetate sheets to fit the size of the glossy white card stock.

2.        Masking Technique for the moon:  punch 1 ¼” circle out of a post-it-note.  Make sure you punch out part of the sticky part of the post-it-note so it will hold in place while you work.  Place circle on glossy white card stock as desired.

Fo   Swipe 1st color of ink onto transparency or acetate using a Classic Ink pad.

4.       Lay transparency or acetate, ink side down, onto glossy white card stock and over post-it-note.  Using your fingers, press and rub the ink on the transparency or acetate onto the glossy white card stock.

5.       Remove and swipe  2nd color to the 2nd piece of transparency or acetate.

6.       Lay transparency or acetate, ink side down, onto glossy white card stock and post-it-note.  As before, use your fingers to press and rub the ink onto the glossy white card stock.

7.       Add a 3rd color if desired.

8.       Touch up any areas that need more color by using what ink is left on the transparency or acetate, or add more color and repeat the steps above.

9.       Remove post-it-note and stamp image.

Try different color combinations for different effects.

You can reuse the transparency or acetate sheets.  Just make sure they are cleaned off, especially if you initially used a darker color and then will be using a lighter color.  Be careful that you are not adding a darker color to your lighter ink pad as you swipe the pad on the transparency.

Supplies Used:

Stamp Set: Inspired by Nature, Teeny Tiny Wishes

Ink: Marina Mist, Bashful Blue and Pretty in Pink for background, Basic Gray for grasses

Paper: Glossy White, Going Gray, Marina Mist

Accessories: transparency sheets purchased at a local office supply store, Modern Label and Word Window punches,  1 ¼” circle punches, Dimensionals
