We've all seen Peeps, those cute marshmallow candies at Walgreens, right? Well, here is a fun project that is easy to do and makes a great quick gift. And not just for Christmas either. There are Peeps available for Valentine's Day, Easter and Halloween. And there is even a Peeps Fan Club for those who can't resist: www.marshmallowpeeps.com
Here's how: Reduce 1 sleeve graham crackers to crumbs and layer all of the crumbs in the bottom a 1 qt. jar. Place Peeps standing up, facing out around the inside of the jar, pressing them against the glass, but don't squash them. Carefully spoon one third cup of brown sugar into center of jar to support the peeps, pressing down to keep it snug. In the center and on top of this, pour one and one half cups of Holiday M&M's. Decorate the lid of the lid and the jar as you please. Tie a ribbon around the neck of the jar.
On a side note, be sure to copy and give the directions to whomever you give the jar to, so they will know how to bake the Peeps right up!
Directions: Empty the jar contents into a bowl. Snip the Peeps into bits with kitchen shears or cut up with a knife. Return the Peep bits to the mixture and mix well. Melt one half cup of butter and add one teaspoon vanilla. Pour this over the dry ingredients, mixing well. Pat into a greased 8"x8" baking dish. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.
Option 1: Leave the Peeps whole: combine remaining ingredients and place the Peeps on top: then bake as directed.
Option 2: Omit the vanilla, bake and serve warm over vanilla ice cream or use blender to mix with ice cream, like a Blizzard.
The jars seal airtight to the Peeps can be on display for a few weeks before they are baked. Oh, and using the wide mouth jars does make filling easier.
