Christmas Ornament Paper Quilling Class

 

Paper Quilling or paper filigree is a craft that involves rolling thin strips of paper into decorative shapes, then arranging them to create a picture.  You can frame your finished works, or turn them into greeting cards, gift tags, picture frames or use them as embellishments for scrapbook pages. It is very easy to do with very little supplies needed.

I am very excited to offer this Christmas Ornament Paper Quilling class taught by the very talented Monica Bergeron, our resident paper quilling expert.

When: Thursday, November 5, 2009 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Where: My crafting studio, 14500 Oakwood Pl NE

Cost: There are two fees for this class depending on whether you have attended other paper quilling classes taught by Monica.

For new students: Cost of the class is $25.00.  This fee will include all the supplies needed for the Christmas ornaments, plus basic paper quilling supplies (quilling tool, a packet of quilling paper, glue and quilling chart) 

For returning students:  Cost of the class is $15.00.  Please be sure to bring your quilling tool and glue.

Full instructions and quilling paper needed for the ornaments will be provided.

A light dinner will be provided, especially for those coming straight from work.

Christmas Autumn Days Wreath-Masking Technique

This was my swap card for the Sunday Stamp Club.  The theme was "Winter or Christmas."  I used the masking technique (see the post below dated 09/27 for details).

Sunday Inspiration Challenge-Autumn Days Wreath-Masking Technique

I love this time of year.  I love the crispness in the air and that I have to wear a jacket and shoes in the morning when I go out to feed the birds.  I especially love fall colors.  I saw this wreath advertised in the Sunday paper, and I instantly thought of the stamp set Autumn Days and the In Colors Crushed Curry and Dusty Durango.  I think these two, along with Soft Suede, are my favorites.

 

And here's my card:

 

 

I used the masking technique to stamp the wreath. Here's how:

I punched a 1 3/8" circle out of a Post-It Note.  This circle will be my mask. The sticky  part on the back of the Post-It Note will keep the mask in place.

 

I laid the punched out circle on my card stock and then stamped around it using the dotted flower image from Autumn Days.  First I stamped using Crushed Curry, cleaned my stamp and then over-stamped using Dusty Durango.

 

Remove the mask and you have a wreath. 

 

  I added the circle greeting from Matchbox Messages to cover the inside of the circle.  Very easy!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Build-A-Bear-A Salute to our Military-Soldier's Angels

Carolyn Clark made these patriotic bears to send to the organization Soldier's Angels. 

Soldier's Angels: "As a volunteer-led nonprofit with 200,000 volunteers, we have over 30 different teams supporting all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Through special projects, dedicated teams and individuals supporting our troops, we make a visible difference in the lives of our service members and their families."

Soldier's Angels has a wonderful program called Cards Plus.

The Cards Plus Team is dedicated to supporting service members, their families, and even Angels with encouraging or celebratory cards and notes. Cards can be requested for deployed soldiers for:

• New baby
  
• Welcome home

 

Carolyn says she is going to start making Santa bears to send to our soldiers in Afghanistan to send to their children back home.  Great job Carolyn!

Scallop Circle Key Chains

I made scallop circle key chains as gifts for guests at two recent workshops.  They are so easy to make, and my guests really liked them because they are personalized just for them.

Here are two of the summer-themed key chains, front and back using Tea Party DSP.

What you need: Big Shot, Large Scallop Circle die, two pieces of Designer Series Paper, cardboard, glue stick, jumbo eyelets, Crop-A-dile and a book rings.

To give the scallop circle some weight, you can use the cardboard backing that comes in the packaging of  Designer Series Paper.  It is just the right weight, not too light, not too heavy, and it is easily cut using the Big Shot.  For these, I used the cardboard that comes with the Wood Paper, also a great resource for cardboard.  Why throw it away?

 I find that is easier to glue the two pieces of Designer Series Paper to the cardboard and then run the piece through the Big Shot.  It is too difficult to match up the scallops if the pieces are cut separately.  I find that Stampin' Up!'s glue sticks work great as the the adhesive.

Decorate as desired once the scallop is cut out.  For these I used Serif Essentials Alphabet Set and Beautiful Butterflies dies.  I ran the butterflies through the Big Shot using the Finial Press embossing folder for added texture.

  

Set the jumbo eyelet using your Crop-A-Dile. Remember the Crop-A-Dile?  Another one of my favorite crafting tools!  Add a book ring and ribbon, and you're all set.

Here are two of the fall-themed scallop key chains using Autumn Traditions DSP.

I used Leaves #2 die.  I then ran them through the Big Shot using Distressed Texturz Plate for added interest.

 

Fabric Ornament Class-Back by popular demand

   

I am so excited to share this class with you!  The class will be taught by a guest instructor, the very talented Joyce Lovato.

These beauties are made with folded fabric, pins, ribbon and styrofoam balls.  They look quilted, but there is not any sewing involved!

Joyce will have all the pieces of fabric pre-cut and supply all the needed materials.  She did want you to be aware that it takes about 1 1/2 hours to make one of these ornaments.  The class is 3 hours, so there shouldn't be any problem finishing your ornament.  And the time spent is well worth it!  You will go home with a gorgeous ornament for your Christmas tree or to give as a gift to someone special. Remember, the holidays will be here before we know it. 

 

 

Sunday Inspiration Challenge-Autumn Traditions

This is the inspiration for this week's challenge.  I saw Soft Suede and Chocolate Chip.

And here's my card.  I used Autumn Traditions Designer Series Paper.  I also ran the Chocolate Chip card through my Big Shot using the Distressed Texturz Plate for a little added interest.  I know it is hard to see, and it's hard to photograph.  Very simple with no stamping involved.

Accessories: 1/16 inch hole punch, Vintage Brads, Big Shot, Distressed Texturz plate (Kit #4)

Polished Stone Jack-o-Lanterns

What happens to the Polished Stone Technique when you don't have the metallic gold re-inker to make the background vein?

The very talented Shelley Rael found out when she created this card for our Stamp Club swap.  The theme was Halloween or Fall.

Scenic Season Polished Stone

I thought since I had the supplies out for the Polished Stone Technique, I'd make a quick card using the stamp set Scenic Season. I purchased this stamp set to use for our personal Christmas cards this year.  It takes a little practice to get it lined up where you want it, and I would suggest you use the Stamp-a-ma-jig to make things easier.  For more Stamp-a-ma-jig information, check here and here for the February 5, 2008 postings on this blog site.

Also, if you cut the "Seasons Greetings" from the trees and mount it on the end of the wood block, you don't have to use the greeting each time you stamp the trees.

 I used a Christmas greeting from Teeny Tiny Wishes on this card because I didn't plan to leave enough room for the larger "Seasons Greetings" that comes with the set. Oops!

Sunday Inspiration Challenge-Polished Stone Branch Out

   When I saw this sweatshirt in a catalog, I instantly thought "Polished Stone".  

 

Then I thought the stamp set Branch Out would be perfect accent to the background:

 

Polished Stone is one of my all time favorite stamping techniques.  It is so simple to do.  Here's how:

Polished Stone Technique

What you need: glossy white card stock. This technique will also work on any nonabsorbent surface like vellum, dominos, acetate, glass, or plastic.

rubbing alcohol

cotton balls

metallic reinkers (gold, silver, copper)

classic  re-inkers

Acrylic sealer-optional

 

-Put a few small drops of the metallic ink randomly onto glossy white card stock.

-Dampen a cotton ball using rubbing alcohol.  Don’t saturate the cotton ball.

-Place a couple of drops of the classic ink onto the wet cotton ball.  You may use 2-3 colors of ink.  I would not suggest using any more than two, or it Can look muddy.

-Dab your cotton ball over the card stock.  Continue dabbing until you achieve the look you want. 

The rubbing alcohol will cause the re-inker to blend together.
The metallic re-inker will sit on top of the color and will make your background vein to look like marble.

-Optional: Seal with acrylic sealer.  If you don’t ,the metallic ink will come off on your fingers.  This does not bother me.  The smell of the acrylic sealer bothers me more!

OR: heat emboss piece with clear embossing powder (make sure alcohol is dry first).  This will also set the metallic ink.

-Use piece as a background or stamp an image using regular black or Stazon black ink.
